How to Keep Your House in Tip Top Shape
As a new homeowner, you may be concerned about how to maintain the brand-new look and feel of your home. While it will inevitably get dirty and start to show signs of wear and tear, there are a few simple things you can do which will help ensure you can keep your house in tip top shape.
Focus on Your Roof
While many home maintenance strategies target cleaning up inside the house, maintaining the lawn, gardens and cleaning the gutters, there is an important area that you shouldn’t be forgetting: your roof. A critical part of the structural integrity of your home, problems with your roof, if left unattended can lead to leaks, damage in your walls or ceilings, and even compromised structural reliability. Inspect your house roof regularly, and if you aren’t sure what you are doing, hire a professional.
Check in on Your Attic
The attic is the room between your roof and the rest of your house, and as such acts as an extension of the roof barrier between the house and the outdoors. Visiting your attic regularly should be an important part of home maintenance. Check in to make sure there is no mold or mildew forming on the walls or items being stored there. Check for discoloration in the ceiling, which can be an indicator of a leak in your roof. Finally, be aware of any new creaks in the floor, or areas where it seems to be less structurally sound, as this could be assign of a problem with the supports in your ceiling and walls.
Keep it Clean
One of the most basic things you can do to maintain the longevity of your home is to keep on top of cleaning. Perform weekly cleaning tasks such as vacuuming, mopping and dusting, and then other larger ones every month, such as cleaning the windows, cleaning out vents, and wiping out cupboards. Not only do these things make your house more aesthetically pleasing, but a dirty house is a welcoming mat for bugs and insects such as cockroaches and ants, and other unwanted pests, including mice and rats. Having any of these in your home can lead to bigger problems down the road, costing you money, and leaving your house in poor condition.
Committing to a few weekly and monthly tasks as well as calling in professional help when you need it is all It takes to help keep your house in tip top shape for years to come.
