Common Radon Questions For Homebuyers

When purchasing a home, there are a lot of different things to think about, and one of the most important things is getting a home inspection. Getting a home inspection is an important part of purchasing a home, because it gives buyers an insight into the condition of the home.

Home inspections are a general analysis of the basic components of a home, but when you get an inspection you can have additional services – like radon testing.

If you are thinking about purchasing a home in Wisconsin, it is a good idea to get a radon test before purchasing the home, to make sure that the home is safe for you and your family.

Here are some common radon questions that homebuyers have!

What is Radon?

Radon is a tasteless, odorless & colorless gas that is very dangerous when concentrated. Radon is very harmful to your health, and can be lethal if highly concentrated for extended periods of time.

Radon is typically found in basements, but can come in through water pipes as well. However, luckily radon is also an easy problem to solve once it has been detected through radon testing.

What is the Purpose of Radon Testing?

Radon testing is important because it is the only way to determine if radon is present in a home. Since radon is undetectable without specialized testing equipment, many people have dangerous radon levels in their homes and have no idea.

Radon causes 21,000+ lung cancer deaths each year, and many of these are because the homeowners never got a radon test and didn’t know that they needed to have it fixed.

How Do You Get Rid of Radon in Your Home?

Although radon is hazardous, it is actually quite easy to get rid of, and that is through a radon mitigation system.

Mitigation systems are highly effective once installed, and you won’t need to worry about radon in your home once you have a system installed. Once the system is installed, just have it tested periodically to make sure that it is working properly!

Will a Radon Mitigation System Lower the Value of a Home?

Many people are worried about purchasing a home that either has a mitigation system already, or their inspector finds levels during a radon test. However, the short answer is no, and in fact, having a radon mitigation system is actually a good thing!

The majority of homes across the country either had, have, or will have radon levels that need to be fixed at some point in time.

This means that homes that already have a mitigation system intact have an advantage, because the home is already prepared & likely won’t have radon issues in the future.
